I constantly reflect on my journey in the vehicle rental industry and one principle stands out as the cornerstone of sustained success: constant self-assessment. Over the years, I have seen firsthand how the habit of regularly scrutinizing every facet of my operation has transformed my business, allowing me to adapt and excel even in the face of rapid industry changes.
I began my career with the belief that managing a fleet and processing reservations were the primary tasks at hand. However, it wasn’t long before I realized that true excellence is not achieved by simply following established routines. Instead, it is the result of a relentless commitment to questioning how we do things, identifying what works, and uncovering what needs improvement.
Every day, I ask myself, “How can I improve my operation compared to yesterday?” This question has driven me to adopt a culture of self-assessment, one that goes beyond routine checks and digs deep into the processes and KPIs that define customer interactions, operational efficiency, and even team dynamics.
Through constant self-assessment, I have learned that understanding my company’s strengths is just as important as recognizing its weaknesses.

When we take the time to critically evaluate our performance, we uncover opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed. For example, a slight delay in rental turnaround time might seem insignificant at first glance, but when examined closely and extrapolated to hundreds or even thousands of cars, it often points to a broader process that could be streamlined. By addressing these nuances, we not only improve efficiency and profitability, but also enhance the overall customer experience — something that is vital in a market where every minute counts.
Self-assessment has also been my compass for navigating change. The vehicle rental landscape is evolving at an unprecedented rate, with new technologies, shifting customer expectations, political climate uncertainty, changes in macroeconomic trends, vehicle availability, cost of financing and fleet, COVID a few years ago, and increasing competition, among many others, all playing a role. In such an environment, complacency is not an option. Regular introspection has allowed me to stay agile and to continuously adapt practices to meet new challenges head-on. It has become clear that without a proactive approach to self-evaluation, even the most successful operations can falter when confronted with unforeseen obstacles.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this practice is how it deepens my understanding of our customers. Every piece of feedback, whether positive or constructive, provides an an opportunity to reflect. By coupling self-assessment with genuine customer engagement, I have been able to identify subtle patterns in customer behavior and expectations. This insight has empowered me to help refine services in our industry in ways that make customers feel truly valued—transforming routine transactions into memorable experiences.

I encourage every operator in this industry to embrace the discipline of constant self-assessment. It is not merely a periodic exercise, but a way of thinking that permeates every decision you make. When you commit to this practice, you create a dynamic environment where continuous improvement becomes the norm rather than the exception. Trust me when I say that this mindset has not only propelled our business forward but has also reinforced our resilience in a competitive market.
Until next time, here’s to smarter, safer, and more efficient car rentals!
Warm regards and keep building your success throughout this year!
